Swash Plate Leveling Tip on a 50 sized Xtreme

I know that there are many types of swash leveling devices out on the market, but for all out accuracy, the dial indicator is the best one to use.

So once you have servo arm centered and both links to the bellcrank are symmetrical, then it's time to level the swash.  The dial indicator attaches to any 10mm main mast.  The mast used was from a 90 sized Freya.  The additional length provides greater range for the dial indicator to move up and down the swash.

I first calibrate zero pitch to get a base line of the pushrod lengths from the bellcranks.  All it takes is to zero one aspect of the swash and adjust the other 2 pushrods to match the length of it.  Once that's levelled, calibrate high pitch and low pitch and adjust the ATV's to get the high and low travels level.  If you find the you are getting assymetrical ATV readings, that means that your bellcranks aren't travelling equally.  If they are off by only a couple points, then I wouldn't worry too much about it, but if they are off alot, then you have to go back and correct the servo to bellcrank pushrods for symmetrical movement.

Hope that helps.

This may sound stupid. BUt where do you get a dial like that and what is it called? As well as the end that mounts the dial and the end that bolts it to the ball joint?

The measuring device is called a Dial Indictor.  I got both the Dial Indicator and Magnetic Base from Princess Auto.  I used the mounting device from the magnetic mount to mount it onto the main shaft.  I did a search and also found them at the House of Tools.

Lee Valley Tools also carries a decent quality unit for a respectable price.  My Princess auto unit didn't hold up all that well.
